Harold E. Carr, Jr., 80, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016 at Mallard Bay Care Center. He was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on June 3, 1935 and was a son of the late Harold E. Carr, Sr. and Mary Lemasters Carr.
He attended schools in Fairmont, WV and graduated from Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University) with a BS Degree in Recreation. On July 3, 1952, he married the former Marilyn Bowman. Harold served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956 stationed in Germany. His employment included working for the B&O Railroad, American Red Cross and Wicomico Board of Recreation and Parks. Harold also worked with Dorchester County Board of Recreation and Parks from 1963 until his retirement in 1987, where he served as the Dorchester County’s first Director of Recs & Parks. He returned to part time employment with Rec/Parks in 1992 and continued until 2013 with over 40 years of service to Dorchester County.
Harold enjoyed golfing, reading, model railroading and meeting his friends for coffee, while his health permitted.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 91, where he was a past commander, Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW, Acacia Lodge #157, AF &AM, Scottish Rite, Boumi Temple, Eastern Shore Shrine Club, where he was past president and past secretary and a honorary member of Rescue Fire Company.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn Carr of Cambridge, two daughters and sons in law Christal and Melvin Stanbrough of Hyattsville and Janet and David Thomas of Salem, two granddaughters Caitlyn Thomas and Emily Thomas, a sister Carolyn McLeary, two uncles John Lemasters and Charles Lemasters and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Harold is preceded in death by two brothers Harry Carr and Ronald Carr, a son in law John W. Thomas and a grandson Harold Kenneth Thomas.
Pallbearers will be Emily Thomas, David Thomas, Jr., David Thomas III, Brian Burton, John Sparrow, Jr., John D. Sparrow, and Jack Rosemere.
A masonic and funeral service will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 12 noon at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Mr. David Tolley officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
