Hazel Delores Edge Short, 78, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She had been a resident at Mallard Bay for the past eight years. She was born in Secretary on July 5, 1931 and was a daughter of the late William A. Edge and Hazel Baker Edge Harrison.
Delores attended schools in Dorchester County and graduated from Hurlock High School as salutatorian of her class in 1948. She attended nursing school at Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington, DE where she became a licensed practical nurse. Delores worked at the Eastern Shore State Hospital and later was a private caregiver. She loved her Mallard Bay family as well as her church families. She attended many churches in the area and loved devotions, church dinners, singing and reading her Bible. She enjoyed talking on the phone, playing cards, playing the piano and will be remembered as being kind, caring and always pleasant to be around.
Delores is survived by a brother William Baker Edge of Federalsburg, stepmother Agnes Cheesman Edge of Cambridge, two nieces Debra Brannock and husband Thomas of Church Creek and Kimberly Edge of Federalsburg, great nephews Brian Burton of East New Market, Derek Edge of Cambridge, Darren Edge of South Carolina and Ryan Schulke of Federalsburg, great nieces Toni DeGroat of Seaford and Rebecca Brannock of Church Creek and an aunt Betty Holmes of Wilmington, DE. Besides her parents, Delores is preceded in death by her husbands, William Insley and Louis Short, a son Richard Insley, a step sister Barbara Powley and two nephews Alvin Edge and Steven Edge.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. at East New Market Cemetery with Captain Stephen Story and Captain Sandra Story officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a local church of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
