Helen F. Hughes

Helen F. Hughes, 86, of East New Market passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024 at UMSMC at Easton. She was born in Cambridge on July 4, 1938 and was a daughter of the late Emory Washington Simmons and Florence Pearl Meredith Simmons.

On September 28, 1956 she married Fredrick William Hughes, Sr. who passed away on May 11, 2016. Mrs. Hughes worked at several crab houses and later at Airpax for 10 years. She enjoyed crocheting, bowling, and gardening. 

She is survived by her two sons Frederick W. Hughes, Jr. of East New Market, and David W. Hughes of East New Market, a grandson Austin Greene of East New Market, a sister Mary Belle Meekins of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Hughes is preceded in death by two sisters Rebecca Fairbanks and Betty Meekins, a half-brother Omar Todd, two half-sisters Lula Simmons, and Dorothy Simmons. 

Pallbearers will be Hubert Meekins, Matt Meekins, Homer King, Mason Little, Steve Cook and Richard Fairbanks, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at 11am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Jack Diehl officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
