Henry George Phillips, 84, of Fishing Creek passed away on Monday, January 5, 2009 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born at Fishing Creek on May 12, 1924 and was a son of the late William Charles and Lillie Mae Creighton Phillips.

He attended school at Hoopers Island High School. He worked on the water in his early teens up and including the morning he expired. In 1956 he started working as a caretaker and hunting guide for the Ransome family and continued to work in that profession until recently. He also worked for several other hunting clubs to include the Doellars Gunning Club and the Wrotens Island Hunt Club. He was an avid sports enthusiast and in his early years raced a speedboat named Flash. While in Australia during the Army he played baseball with several big league players including Phil Rizzuto and Dominick DiMaggio.

From March 1944 until February 1946 he served with the 534 th Amphibious Engineers Regiment in Australia, Philippines, Japan, Bataan, Corregidor and New Guinea. He was Coxswain of a 50 foot landing craft responsible for steering and maneuvering the craft with supervision and storing of cargo and for the coordination and control of the work of the crew members. During his tour of duty he received the Good Conduct Metal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Award, and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

Upon returning to the states he played on the 315 Market baseball team for many years.

He was a member of the Hoopers Island Fire Company, Maryland Waterman Association, American Legion Post 91, Dorchester Seafood Harvesters Association, Chesapeake Bay Seafood Industries Association, Past Member of the Cambridge VFW and was associated with the Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Pauline Alberta Simmons whom he married in 1946, children a�" Thomas Henry Phillips (Jane), Kathy Sarah Phillips Gootee (Larry), Joanne Phillips, and Larry Richard Phillips (Frannie). There are five grandchildren, Robert Larry Gootee, Jr. (Dawn), Robin Lynn Dukes (Brian), Mickey Ausmussen (Angela), Zachary Charles Phillips and Zoe Ariel Phillips. Six great-grandchildren a�" Lauren Gootee, Luke Gootee, Logan Dukes, Lacey Dukes, Jenna Ausmussen, and Ellie Ausmussen. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a sister, Violet Sarah and several siblings who died in infancy.

Pallbearers include Richard Ransome, Percy Ransome, Ronnie Robbins, Larry Powley, Frank King, Larry Simmons, Tommy Collins and Jack McGlaughlin.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2009 at 12 noon at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Joe Kelly and Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veteran's Cemetery near Hurlock. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations will be accepted at either the Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Priscilla McGlaughlin, P.O.
