Herbert G. Hastings, 58 of Cambridge, passed away at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury on Saturday, August 7, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on January 30, 1952 and was a son of Shirley Hubbard Hastings, and the late Otto Burton Hastings.
Herb attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1970. He attended Kirkland Hall and Ocean City College, where he played on the basketball team. He had worked as a lifeguard in Ocean City for about years at the Stardust Motel, and had also operated a hunting guide service and a hunting club. He enjoyed flea markets, going to yard sales and spending time outdoors. Herb had also operated The Wayback Machine, which was an antiques and collectible shop on Route 50 near Cambridge. Playing basketball had been a lifelong passion of his. As a younger man he had also played guitar in several rock and roll bands. Herb also enjoyed primitive woodworking. He had been in failing health for the past year when he passed away on Saturday evening.
Survivors include his mother Shirley Hastings of Cambridge, one sister Donna Tarbutton of Easton, his soul mate and companion Frances Harper of Cambridge, two nieces, Jessica Jones and Sheila Hastings and one nephew Rusty Hastings. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother Burton R. Hastings.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will take place at 11:00 AM Monday at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Pallbearers will be Rusty Hastings, Brandon Hastings, Steve Bloodsworth, Brian Yost, Greg Webster, Dennis Wooten, Jay Bradshaw, John Archer, John Brittingham and Richard Hubbard..
