H.L. "Sonny" Whiteley, 84, of East New Market passed away on December 20, 2012 at his home. He was born in Easton on June 18, 1928 and was a son of the late Carlton and Dorothy Patchett Whiteley.
He graduated from Easton High School in 1946. While in high school, Mr. Whiteley excelled in sports. He played four years first string on the soccer team, three years first string in basketball, three years first string in softball and baseball. Mr. Whiteley had the school record for the softball throw and ran the 100 yard dash in 10 flat. Mr. Whiteley served two years in the U.S. Navy. After serving his country, he attended and graduated from Strayer Business College in 1950. On April 1, 1966, he married the former Rosalena V. "Nookie" Vickers, who passed away on January 13, 2000. Mr. Whiteley was a salesman with Easton Candy Company for twenty five years. In 1972, he received his real estate license and sold real estate with Sewell Matthews and Powell Realtors for thirty five years. He was voted realtor of the year in 1986. After retiring, Mr. Whiteley became a gentleman farmer who enjoyed raising chickens, guineas, pigeons, ducks and geese. He enjoyed hunting on his farm that he loved at Oyster Shell Point. Mr. Whiteley was a member of the Cambridge Lodge #1272 B.P.O.E. Elks, Cambridge Moose Lodge, the American Legion Post #91, Grand National Waterfowl Association and Ducks Unlimited.
He is survived by three children Allen Lee Whiteley (Liz) of Easton, Ward Slacum (Mary) of East New Market and Phyllis Burton of Cambridge, seven grandchildren Tracie Whiteley (Eddie Hayden), Kris Kossick (Eddy Hunteman), Ward Slacum, Jr. (Julie), Tammy Murphy (Rick Edwards), Roslyn Tibbs (Lee), Troy Webb (Terri), Jason Webb (Lisa Youngbar), fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, a sister in law Mary Ann Whiteley, three nieces and two nephews. He is also survived by long time friends Jimmy Harrington, Richard Dresher and Dave Nickerson. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Whiteley is preceded in death by a brother G. Allen Whiteley.
Pallbearers will be Richard Dresher, Jimmy Harrington, Dave Nickerson, Ward Slacum, Jr., Troy Webb and Jason Webb. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Collins, Jim Towers, Devin Tibbs and Eddie Hayden.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Immanuel United Church of Christ with Rev. Robert Peters officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions can be made to the Grand National Waterfowl Association, 411-B Dorchester Avenue, Cambridge, Maryland 21613.
