Ivan W. Crandell, Sr., 91, formerly of East New Market and Cambridge, Maryland, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salisbury, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 11, 1921, he was the son of the late William Wesley Crandell and Mary Edna Fountain Crandell.
On June 12, 1940, he married Aileen Burton Crandell. They were married 67 years until she passed away on October 29, 2007. Ivan (sometimes affectionately known as "Bud", "Buddy" or "Pop") was devoted to his family as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Cambridge, Maryland, since 1947, serving on a number of committees throughout the years, and remained an active member until his decline in health. He was affiliated with Nathan's Furniture Store and Dean's Furniture Store until his retirement. He was a past member of the Cambridge Chapter and the Salisbury Chapter (Peninsulaires) of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Singing in America.
He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Ivan W. Crandell, Jr. and Yoshiko Crandell, of Newport News, Virginia, and Gary L. Crandell and Sonia Cannon Crandell, of Salisbury, Maryland; a grandson, Mike Crandell, of Ogden, Utah; a granddaughter and her husband, Keiko and Richard Dailey, of Hillsboro, Oregon; two grandsons and their wives, Jeffrey L. Crandell and Tiffany, of Redondo Beach, California, and J. Ryan Crandell and Jessica, of Salisbury, Maryland; two great-granddaughters, Erika Dailey and Monica Dailey; a great-grandson, Maddox James Crandell; two brothers and their wives, Donald C. Crandell, Sr. and Sally, and Robert D. Crandell and Jacki; a sister and her husband, Patricia Lee Beitz and Mel; sister-in-laws, Katie Crandell and Martha Lee Crandell; a brother-in-law, Eugene T. Sawyer; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Lee Hubbard and Juanita C. Sawyer; two brothers, Adelbert F. (Wesley) Crandell and William B. Crandell; two sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Travers and Lois Phillips; and six brother-in-laws, Oden Burton, Lehman Burton, Dick Burton, Roland Burton, Phillip Burton and James Phillips.
The family would like to thank all the staff and employees of Somerset Gardens and Golden Gardens assisted living facilities, Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Coastal Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, Maryland 21613, with Pastor Brent Coleman and Pastor Steve Trice officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the East New Market Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Donald Crandell, Jr., Todd Crandell, James Phillips, Brian Burton, Dennis McCollister and Matthew McCollister.
