James Martin Bishop, Sr. a resident of Glen Burnie and formerly of Cambridge passed away on November 7, 2010 of natural causes.
He was born July 5, 1928 in Sharptown to the late Harold Thomas Bishop and Mary Elizabeth Mumford. Jim was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting in the Navy in June 1944 at Bainbridge Naval Training Center at the age of 16. He served in the 7th Fleet in the Atlantic and also in the 16th Fleet in the Pacific until his discharge in July 1946. That year, he returned home to Mardela Springs where he met Mary Katherine Collins, known as Kitty, his future wife of sixty four years.
Jim worked in the Automotive Industry most of his adult life. First, as a salesman and later he became the Director of Audits for the Department of Motor Vehicle Administration. He was recognized as a leader who promoted people regardless of their race or nationality. Jim sometimes known as "Duke" to his friends enjoyed many hobbies: boating, fishing, raising horses, traveling and his tools.
He is survived by two daughters Phyllis Ball (Mickey) of Salisbury, Kathy Bishop (Raymond Meyer) of Kent Island as well as three sons James M. Bishop Jr. of Cambridge, William D.H. Bishop of Glen Burnie and David A. Bishop (Ruth) of Linthicum Heights and a sister Mary Willoughby (Neal) of Cambridge.
Relatives and Friends may call at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge on Thursday, November 11, 2010. A viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with the service starting at 2 p.m. Interment immediately following at Mardela Springs Cemetery.
