James Stanley Sims, Jr., 86 of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Patton, PA on February 23, 1924 and was a son James Stanley Sims and Charlotte Nickerson Sims.
During WWII he was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program at NC State University and then served in Central Europe as Army Technician Fourth Grade, Battery C 627th Field Artillery Battalion.
He continued his education at Pennsylvania State University and received BSEE and MSEE degrees. He worked as an electronics engineer in Windsor, CT and Montgomery County, MD before joining Cambridge Scientific Industries in 1977. He retired in 1990 as Vice President of Engineering at CSI.
Jim loved the Chesapeake Bay and boating. He was a member of the Potomac Power Squadron, before moving to the Cambridge Power Squadron. He attained the rank of Navigator and taught Navigation for the Power Squadrons. He was a volunteer for Photo Records for St. Michael's Maritime Museum and was awarded a life membership for his service.
More recently, Jim served as Curator of Records and Intake for Dorchester County Historical Society. He was also a past Trustee and Trustee-Emeritus at DCHS.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jean McDougall Sims; a daughter, Karen Elizabeth Sims Sedell (Charles Gregory) of Waterford, CT; and a son Thomas Gregory Sims (Kalyn Prestel) of Howard County, MD. He also leaves six grandsons--Eric Sedell; and Taylor, Alex, Stephen, Matthew, and Luke Sims. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his sisters Ann MacDonald and Marjory Shapiro of Florida.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Dorchester County Historical Society, 1003 Greenway Dr. Cambridge, MD 21613.
