Jean Brubaker Fountain, 83, of Cambridge, MD went to be with her heavenly father on August 5, 2022 at Bayleigh Chase in Easton, MD. She was born on July 9, 1939 in Palatka, Florida. Jean was the daughter of the late Paul D. Brubaker and Maud Atkinson Brubaker.
Jean grew up in Federal Point, Florida, surrounded by her large family. Her love for nursing, her eventual profession, was sparked in high school when she helped care for her grandmother, Rebecca Taylor Atkinson. Jean played the trombone in the Palatka High School band and had fond memories of marching and playing during homecoming at the University of Florida. After graduation, Jean became an LPN and worked at Dorchester General Hospital before moving on to work for Dr. Jimmy McCarter, and finally becoming a plant nurse at Western Publishing Company and Coldwater Seafood Corporation.
On September 27, 1958, Jean married William H. Fountain (“Bill”), whom she met while he was in the Navy stationed at Green Cove Springs in Florida. Following the wedding, they settled in Cambridge, where Jean lived until 2018. Their daughter, Cheryl Lynn, was a blessing in Jean’s life. Jean loved animals and had several dogs throughout the years, including a much-loved cocker spaniel named Pepper. In later years she enjoyed her fur grand kitties Henry and Charlie. She was a lifelong avid reader, and also enjoyed watching TV and coloring bright flowers in her coloring books.
Jean had a strong faith foundation and was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. There, she served as the church secretary for several years, and later as President of the JOYs. She cherished her friendships with the ladies of the church.
When Jean’s health began to fail she moved to her daughter’s house in Edgewater, MD, and from there to a nursing home in Annapolis and finally to Bayleigh Chase, where she was happy to be back on the Eastern Shore.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Bayleigh Chase for the wonderful care they gave to Jean during the time she was there.
She is survived by her daughter Cheryl L. Fountain of Edgewater, MD. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Fountain, and her sister, Linda Brubaker Collins.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 11am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Dale Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
