Jeanette Pomeroy, 96, died at her home in Dailsville on Thanksgiving afternoon; kind care of Coastal Hospice. She had been in failing health for several years and was residing at the home of her daughter Mary Sellers and son-in law Robert Sellers, and grandson Donald Sellers, who was a primary caregiver.
She was born in Town Point on August 8, 1918, the oldest child of William H. Brannock and Sadie Jones Brannock. A lifelong member of Antioch Methodist Church, Jeanette was an active member of that community of faith while her health permitted.
She was an honors graduate of Cambridge High School and an academic scholarship student to Western Maryland (now McDaniel) college in the late 1930's. While attending college she worked summers in the law office of the late Senator Frederick Malkus. Following her graduation from college, she began a teaching career in mathematics at Sparrows Point in Baltimore at the beginning of World War II.
At the conclusion of the War, Jeanette married the late Crawford Pomeroy, a returning GI from Media, Pennsylvania who had served in Europe. The couple purchased a home and property in Dailsville at the head of the Little Choptank which they operated as a dairy farm for a number of years. In addition to helping run the farm, Jeanette returned to her teaching career, beginning at the old Cambridge High School and then, following the birth of her three children, moving to North Dorchester High when that school first opened. In all, she taught 37 years, helping thousands of county residents to understand the fundamentals of mathematics.
Following her retirement from teaching in the 1980's, Jeanette maintained her lifelong commitment to the church- contributing to a local history of Antioch and Town Point and a number of charitable causes for the less fortunate. She also stayed attached to the rhythms of rural life - keeping a dairy cow for personal use and raising much of the family's food from her large garden. Her large home cooked Sunday dinners were legendary among family and the many friends who visited her Dailsville home. Her generous public spirit never diminished and she continued to provide gratis tutoring assistance in math until her early nineties.
In addition to her husband Crawford, Jeanette was predeceased by a sister, Olive Travers of Salisbury and a brother William J. Brannock of the Neck District.
She is survived by her three children: Martha Williams of Dallas Texas, Fred Pomeroy and his wife Lexine Lowe of the Neck District, and Mary Sellers and her husband Robert of Dailsville. Other survivors include grandchildren Rebecca Altizer and husband James of Dallas Texas, Eliza Weih and husband Chris of Cheltenham, England, Johanna Stoches and husband Joseph of Silver Spring, Maryland, William Pomeroy and wife Fiona Botwick of Manhattan, New York, Errett Pusey of San Francisco, CA, Donald Sellers of Dailsville, and Katie Sellers and her fiancAC.e Bradley Warfield of Tampa Florida. In addition, Jeanette will be fondly remembered by eight great grandchildren.
