Jerome "Zack" Shenton went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 27, 2014. He was born on September 22, 1926 in Taylors Island and was the son of the late Milton and Lavenia Burton Shenton. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Madeline L. Shenton, a brother Milton M. Shenton and a sister Kathleen S. Mowbray. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shenton served in the U.S. Navy during WWII upon the USS Herbert J. Thomas, a DD833 Destroyer in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945.
He owned and operated Shenton's Body and Paint Shop, originally in Dunns Alley in 1960; then in 1963 built his shop at 503 Henry Street in Cambridge.
Zack attended the "Little" Taylors Island United Methodist Church for 73 years, and has been on the board of directors for the past 20 years. For 11 years, he was the bass singer in the Chaplin Quartet.
Mr. Shenton was an avid Skeet Shooter, claiming Jack Daniels Grand Opening 410 Champion in 1976 and 1977 and State Champion 5 man team in 1977, 1979 and 1980. He was also Navy team champion in 410, 28, 20 and 12 gauge guns. He was AAA across the board in all four guns, better known as the "Big Gun." Zack shot competitions from Florida to Maine. He was a member of the Cambridge Skeet Club for about fifty years and on the board of directors for the past twenty.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Burial will take place afterwards at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Taylors Island United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 28, Taylors Island, MD 21669.
