Jesse B. Hurley, Jr.

Jesse B. Hurley, Jr., 93, of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Mallard Bay Care Center. He was born in Cambridge on June 17, 1930 and was a son of the late Jesse B. Hurley and Mildred Manning Hurley.

 

He graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1948. After attending high school, he delivered the Morning Sun the 6 o’clock paper, and after school worked at the Taylor shop and at seven p.m. at Craig’s Drug Store. On August 29, 1952, he married the former Joan “Buttercup” Murphy, who passed away on October 23, 2010. In 1945 through 1961, he worked with his father at Jesse B. Hurley and Son. In 1961 he opened Jess Jr.’s Body Shop, which later became Jesse Jr.’s and Sons Body Shop and Jesse Jr.’s Enterprises and today it is operated as Jesse Jr.'s and Sons LLC by his sons Jeff and Jed which he was very proud of and his fourth generation grandsons and a large body shop and towing service.

 

In the early 1950's, he was a member of the Cambridge Jaycees, where he served as a board member, active in the Boy Scout troop # 128, merit badge for the eagle scout, Cambridge Little League, Cambridge Elks #1272, 32nd Degree Mason, a trustee of Cambridge Lodge #66, A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Boumi Temple Shrine, Baltimore, MD, past president of the Eastern Shore Shrine Club, past patron of Eastern Star #50, served in the Maryland Army National Guard as a platoon sergeant 29th Infantry Division, Post #88 of the 29th Division,  over 60 year member of Grace United Methodist Church and recently has been attending St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He is also a life member of the Cambridge ELKS and the American Legion Post #91.

 

He enjoyed the outdoors, boating, fishing and spending time with the family.

 

He is survived by his two sons Jeffery O. Hurley, Sr. of Cambridge, Jed M. Hurley, Sr. and wife Brenda of Cambridge, three grandchildren Jeffery O. Hurley, Jr. and wife Sarah, Jed “J.R.” Hurley, Jr. and wife Abbie and Amanda Jo Hurley Hallowell and husband Logan, four great grandchildren Abriella Hallowell, Leilani Hallowell, Jed M. Hurley III and Maddie Hurley. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Hurley is preceded in death by a son Jay L. Hurley and a granddaughter Jessica Anne Hurley.

 

A Masonic service will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 1pm followed by a memorial service at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth and Rev. Gary Hickman officiating. Family will receive friends 12 to 1. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the International Tow and Recovery Museum Building Fund in memory of Jesse B. Hurley, Jr., 3315 Board Street, Chattanooga, TN 37408 or to the Wounded Warriors.
