Joanna Lloyd Tilghman

April 28, 1946 — March 9, 2011

JOANNA LLOYD TILGHMAN, age 64, died suddenly at Dorchester General Hospital, Cambridge, Maryland, on March 9, 2011. She was the beloved mother of Emory E. Tamplin, III ("Chip"), of Cambridge, and daughter of Mary Donnell Singer Tilghman of Wye House, Easton, Maryland and the late Richard Carmichael Tilghman, MD. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Tilghman Gordon of Keene, Virginia, and her brother, Richard C. Tilghman, Jr., also of Wye House as well as her nieces, Mary Donnell Gordon Montague of Schuyler, Virginia and Elizabeth Lloyd Tilghman of Baltimore, Maryland and her nephews, William S. Gordon, Jr., also of Wye House, Charles C. T. Gordon of Keene, Virginia, and John A.S. Tilghman, Jr. of Baltimore and two great nephews. She was predeceased by another brother, John A. S. Tilghman. Joanna was a direct descendant of Edward Lloyd, who acquired the Wye House property in 1659.

Joanna was born and spent her childhood in Baltimore. She graduated from Bryn Mawr School in 1964 and received her BA from Chatham College, Pittsburgh, in 1968. She moved to Dorchester County in 1975. After her family, Joanna's greatest love was ornamental gardening, particularly daffodils. She became a Master Gardener many years ago and was a flower show and horticulture judge for both the Federated Garden Clubs and the Garden Club of America as well as the Maryland Daffodil Society. She was regularly consulted on horticultural matters, given her expertise. Over the years, she exhibited her daffodils throughout Maryland and regularly won blue ribbons for them. She also was a member for many years of the Altar Guild at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge and was known for her beautiful flower arrangements. The other love of her life was Monsieur's Folly, an early 19th Century house in Dorchester County on the banks of the Choptank River, where she maintained beautiful gardens and a magnificent home. She was a member of the Harbor Club in Easton, the Mount Vernon Club in Baltimore and the Society of Colonial Dames of America. In addition to gardening and her Church, Joanna was keenly interested in environmental issues and preservation of farm land and other open spaces as well as preservation of historic structures throughout the Eastern Shore. She served on many not-for-profit boards during her lifetime, including the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, Environmental Concern, Preservation Maryland, Old Wye Mill and The Country School, Easton. She was also a member of the Amateur's Garden Club in Baltimore and the Dorchester Garden Club in Cambridge, of which she was a past President.

A funeral service will be held at Wye House at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 12, with burial in the family graveyard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, P.O. Box 169, Queenstown, Maryland 21658.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
