John Boyd Kerns, Jr. died peacefully at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester on February 8, 2015 in Cambridge, Maryland at the age of 73.
John is survived by his wife of 50 years Fraya Kerns, six children, six grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews, and eight great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother and sister.
John was born on November 13, 1941 in Washington, D.C. to John and Alberta Kerns. He graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1960 and married in 1964. After moving to Kentland, Maryland, John began working for York International, and eventually became a licensed master HVAC tradesman. His success in business can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural mechanical ability. He took pride in the fact that he always left his customers satisfied. He was a Sergeant with the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the 82nd Airborne Division never left him, as friends and family will attest. John had lifelong ties to the neighborhood. He lived in Gambrills, Maryland for over thirty years and retired in Fishing Creek, Maryland, which he referred to as “the island”. His sense of humor brightened many lives and he always made time for family and friends when the opportunity arose.
A memorial service is scheduled for noon on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, Fishing Creek, Maryland 21634 with a reception to follow. Pastor Doug Ridley will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John’s life. Contributions to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803 would be appreciated. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge
