John W. Tieder, Jr, 74 of Marco Island FL, passed away on Saturday, June 27th, 2015 at his farm on Taylors Island surrounded by his family and close friends.
Born on December 16, 1940 in Cambridge, MD, he was the son of the late John W Tieder, Sr. and Isabel Tubman Tieder. John grew up in East Cambridge and always told great stories of his early years, the lifelong friendships made there and how he loved that community. After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1958 he enlisted in the United States Army and served for 2 years as an MP guarding the Redstone Nuclear Warhead. He was the 1971 Skeet Rookie of the Year – Sports Afield. In the early seventies, along with a group of fellow sportsmen, John formed the Dorchester County branch of Ducks Unlimited. In 1977 his boat Shikari won the Hatteras Marlin Club Blue Marlin Tournament and in 1994 he repeated the win with “His Whole Gang”.
He spent the last 30 years of his life with his wife Kathleen O. Tieder. They split their time between his beloved Fruit Hill Farm on Taylors Island and as residents of Marco Island, FL. Together they enjoyed a life filled with traveling, great friends, and entertaining people from all walks of life from politicians and celebrities to his favorites: hunters and fisherman. Nothing made him happier than a cold winter day with the ducks flying and family and friends filling the Lodge.
John was President of John W Tieder Inc. of Cambridge. This electrical firm was established 70 years ago by his parents and he remained active in the family business until the time of his death. Under his leadership, the company grew to be one of the largest private employers on the Eastern Shore and was for many years the largest privately owned electrical company on the East Coast.
John was a Founder of the Bank of the Eastern Shore and served on its Board of Directors for 26 years. He was a Co-Founder and avid supporter of the Grand National Waterfowl Association serving on its Board, the second President and his favorite part as a host Farm during the annual Hunts which included the Turlock Wildfowl Luncheon. He was a founding member of the Parana River Hunting LLC in Argentina and enjoyed numerous hunts there with family and friends. John was appointed to the Maryland Wildlife Commission by Governor Schaeffer. He was a longtime member of the American Legion, Cambridge Yacht Club, the Cambridge Elks, Cambridge Skeet Club, and a life member of Talbot Rod and Gun Club and Grace Foundation of Taylors Island.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, JB Tieder and his wife Patti of Taylors Island, Jodie Marshall and her husband Bobby of Woolford, stepdaughters Lisa Hubbard of Cambridge, and Shannon Collis and her husband Justin of Delmar, MD. Grandchildren Josh Tieder, Jessica Hall and her husband Derek, Jordan Tieder, JT Tieder, Jacob Tieder, Jackson Tieder, Whitney Marshall, Max Marshall, Chase Collis, Shelby Collis, and Kasey Tieder. He is also survived by several aunts including Joy Carpenter, Jean Cantwell and Barbara Lane, Uncle Bobby Tubman and several nieces and nephews and very special friends John and Gloria McWilliams, Mike and Diana Willey, and Jimmy and Carol Jones.
Honorary pallbearers will be past and present members of the Fruit Hill Farm Hunting Club.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Tuesday June 30, 2015 at 2pm at Fruit Hill Farm, 615 Taylors Island Road, Taylors Island, MD 21669, where family will greet friends, followed by a brief service at 3pm. The attire for the service is casual. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733 Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
