Joe attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1961. Joe had worked as a bricklayer for Allen L. Tyler & Son. He had also worked as a Cambridge City Policeman from 1968 until 1969 and had also worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Dorchester Co. Sheriff Office for several years, until he resigned in 1989. On January 7, 1989 he was married to the former Katherine Gobeli. He also operated his own business, KAJO Contractors, doing brick work and concrete work. Joe was a member of the Bricklayers Union, former member and officer of Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose, and also was a member of Choptank Memorial Post # 7460 VFW. He was an exempt member of Rescue Fire Co. Inc. where he had served as an officer on the Salvage Corps., and he had held a number of other offices. Joe was also a member of the Linkwood-Salem Vol. Fire Co. He was also a Past President of the Delmarva Fireman's Association, and had also served in other capacities. Joe had been an active member of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge where he had served as a trustee, and worked with the Men's Prayer Breakfast, had been active in the R.A. Program and had been active in the children's activities program until his health started to failing. He also enjoyed working with antiques as well as guns and helping people. He had served as a coach for girls softball in Cambridge. He had been in failing health for the past ten years when he passed away at his home on Saturday
Survivors include his wife Kathy G. Dickerson of Cambridge, three daughters Patti J. Dickerson, Beverly J. Dickerson and Holly E. Dickerson all of Cambridge, one granddaughter Morgan E. Elzey of Cambridge, two brothers Walter S. Dickerson of Cambridge and Clement T. Dickerson of Haysville, Kansas, one sister Dorothy Parks of Woolford, his father in law Johnnie Gobeli of Baltimore and several nieces and nephews. He was especially close to friends Cecil Parks and Rose Andrew. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters Judith Dickerson, Lillian Dickerson, Catherine Dickerson and Betty DePaul and four brothers Edward C. Dickerson, William Dickerson, James Dickerson and John R. "Big Boy" Dickerson.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday afternoon at the First Baptist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Jerry Wade and the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Members of Rescue Fire Co. Inc. will accord full fire company honors. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, and during the hour preceding the service. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Calvin S. Stack, Jeffrey O. Hurley, Rick Travers, Adam Pritchett, Martin Pepper, William C. Press, Kemp Brooks and Gary Phillips. Memorial contributions may be made to the J. Johnson Phillips Educational Fund, c/o Rescue Fire Co. Inc., P.O. Box 766, Cambridge, MD 21613.
