Kenneth Poulton Cromwell, 90, formerly of Baltimore, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2012 at Dorchester General Hospital. Kenneth was born in Baltimore on December 18, 1922 to the late Kenneth and Edith Vance Cromwell.
He graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute class of 1942. After high school he joined the United States Navy from 1942-1945 where he operated the radar range finder for the first turret gun on the U.S.S. Philadelphia CL-41 in the Mediterranean, receiving the Navy Unit Commendation awarded to U.S.S. Philadelphia many years later. Before retiring, he worked for C&P Telephone Company for 40 years. Mr. Cromwell was also a Boy Scout Leader for 40 yrs. and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1983. He was a Rotary Club member for 20 yrs. He was an active member in St. James Episcopal Church in Parkton, who awarded him with a St. George Award for distinguished service by adults to youth. Mr. Cromwell was on the Board of Directors of the Baltimore Telephone Federal Credit Union and was president from 1959-1961, and a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of the American Legion Post #91 in Cambridge and a Lifetime member of the Choptank Memorial Post #7460 VFW, and also a member of U.S.S. Philadelphia CL-41 Association.
He is survived by his four daughters; Tracey L. Phillips and husband Buzz of Cambridge, Stewart L. Miller of Pasadena, Paige W. Demski and husband David of Bel Air, Courtney B. Cromwell of Darlington, son John D. Cromwell of York, PA, two grandchildren, E.J. Eberly of Darlington, and Brent D. Phillips of Virginia Beach, VA.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to U.S.S. Philadelphia CL-41 Association, c/o Mrs. Dot Kelly, 1864 Branchwood St., Norfolk, VA 23518-3122. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
