Kenneth L. Hughes, 81, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born in Andrews on May 17, 1935 and was a son of the late Howard A. and Flossie Estelle Meredith Hughes. Mr. Hughes was raised by his father and stepmother the late Beulah Jones Hughes after his mother passed away at an early age.
He graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1953. On March 2, 1962, he married the former Iris Warfield. Mr. Hughes served in the Army National Guard. He worked as the clerk treasurer for the City of Cambridge for over 30 years. For many years after retiring from the city, he worked at Robbins and Adams. He enjoyed reading and collected model airplanes. Mr. Hughes was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he played the piano in the Baraca Class and later played the organ for the church. He was also the choral director.
He is survived by his wife Iris Hughes of Cambridge, two children Kelly Flack and husband Kevin of Woolford and Mike Hughes and wife Valerie of Ocean Pines, four grandchildren Erin Flack, Caitlin Flack, Ruslan Flack and Cadence Hughes, a sister Henrietta Jarrett of Linkwood and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers Harold Hughes and H. Wilson Hughes and a sister Ruth Adkins.
Pallbearers will be Mike Hughes, Kevin Flack, David Pope, Steve Tull, Ed Howard and Sonny Willey.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 11 am at Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge with Rev. Christina Blake and Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will follow at Spedden Seward Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10 to 11. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to All God’s Children International, 1400 NE 136th Ave., Ste. 201, Vancouver, WA 98684. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
