Laura Ellen Sockriter Bromwell, age 87, of Madison passed away at Dorchester General Hospital on June 17, 2012. She had been at Chesapeake Woods Rehabilitation facility since May 15th. She was born on February 13, 1925 to the late Daisy and Peter Sockriter. On December 24, 1943, she married Robert L. Bromwell, Sr. who died on September 13, 1960.
Laura was a beautician for 51 years and retired from Cecille's Beauty Salon at the age of 70. She was a member of the Joppa and Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Madison, Madison Volunteer Fire Company Women's Auxiliary, American Legion Post 91 and Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW. She will always be remembered for her love, concern and compassion for others. Her laughter and caring for others was her joy of life and raised the spirits of those around her; she knew no strangers because everyone was family.
She leaves behind those most dear to her, son Robert Bromwell, Jr. and his wife Dodie, of Cambridge, Charles Amos Bromwell III and wife Carol of Church Creek, daughters Linthia Mills and husband Danny of Madison, and Nettie Hastings and husband Thomas of Ocean City, MD; brothers William Sockriter and wife Merle of Tappahannock, Virginia and Robert Sockriter of Silver Spring, MD; sisters-in-law Ruth Sockriter and her son Gary of Glen Burnie, MD and Ladye Sockriter Parsons of Linthicum, MD and her son Johnny of Kentucky, grandchildren Carla Todd and husband Jake of Cambridge, Matthew Bromwell and wife Michele of Boston, MA, Kim Corbman and Sharon Lawrence of Delaware, Lynn Scott and husband Greg, Gordon Corbman and wife Emily of Cambridge, great-grandchildren; Jordan and Emily Todd, Meghan McCarter, Logan Rippons and Caleb Scott, Irelyn, Allen and Brandon Corbman; her special neighbors Richard and Debby Moxey, Eldridge and Faye King Willey, Martha Mills, Barbara and Susan Wingate, who will always be held close to our hearts.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Daisy Sockriter; husband Robert L. Bromwell, Sr., father and mother-in-law, Capt. Charles A. Bromwell, Jr. and Louise Bromwell; brothers Edward Sockriter, Louis Sockriter and John Sockriter; and her second family, Charles and Amy Wroten Brittingham (Christopher), sister Jeannette Brannock and Louis J. Tyler, her wonderful companion for 32 years.
Pallbearers will be Robert L. Bromwell, Jr., Charles Amos Bromwell III, Matthew Bromwell, Jake Todd, Greg Scott, Logan Rippons, Gordon Corbman and Brandon Corbman. Honorary pallbearers will be Samuel Horseman, David Horseman, Richard Moxey, Eldridge Willey, David Frazier, Chick Moore and Bobby Aaron.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge at 1 p.m. with Rev. Pardee Bramble officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Church, Madison. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 19 from 6:30 to 8 pm.
