Lawrence G. Bohlen, Esq.

Lawrence G. "Larry" Bohlen, of Cambridge, died Jan. 14 at Easton Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 78.

A native of Baltimore County, he was born Nov. 7, 1933 in Stemmers Run. He graduated from Kenwood High School in 1951 and earned both his undergraduate and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Baltimore. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and served overseas in both Okinawa and Vietnam as Judge Advocate. Stateside, he served in Quantico, Va., and Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif., where he taught law at Pepperdine University. From 1976 to 1983, he served as Judge Advocate for Marine Corps air stations along the east coast. His last active duty was as Chief Appellate Justice for the Court of Military Review in Washington, D.C. During his career he earned many honors, including the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. Retiring after 30 years of service with the rank of Colonel, he moved to Cambridge in 1983 and opened his law office on Court Lane, where he practiced until his retirement in 2007.

He appreciated his study of the Bible in association with Jehovah's Witnesses. He regularly attended Christian meetings and engaged in spiritual activities, including the door-to-door preaching work, until his health prevented it. He especially looked forward to when this earth will be restored to its original paradise condition, and had the hope of being resurrected to be with his loved ones.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he always enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting locally on the Eastern Shore, as well as in Florida, Montana, South Dakota, Alaska, Africa, Scotland, and South America.

He was predeceased by his father, John. E. Bohlen Sr.; his mother, Marie Scharmer Bohlen; and his brother, John E. Bohlen, Jr.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Nancy Irons Bohlen of Cambridge; his daughter, whom he always loved and never forgot, Darlene Marie Bohlen of Baltmore; his son, Lawrence J. Bohlen (Karen) of Severn; and his daughter, Sandra Marie Bohlen of Pennsylvania; a stepson, Jeremy T. Chancey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Jennifer VanWilliams of Mobile, Ala., and Joy E. Messick Woolston (Benjamin) of Cambridge; five granddaughters; and many loving cousins, relatives, friends, and business associates.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 22) at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2616 Cambridge Beltway, in Cambridge, Md. In lieu of flowers, please pay your legal bills. You know who you are. Arrangements by Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
