Lawrence Gomer Davies of Cambridge MD died peacefully at home on Sunday, November 12, 2023. Born in Washington D.C. on January 5, 1936, Larry was the son of the late Catharine Mae Rider Davies and Gomer Lewis Davies Jr. (and Harriet). He was 87 years old.

A graduate of Washington-Lee High School in Arlington VA and the University of Maryland, Class of 1963, Larry also served 6 years in the D.C. Air National Guard. Larry met the love of his life, his wife of 64 years, Helen, while both were working at Melpar Inc. From there, Helen and Larry supported each other while both finished college. Upon graduation with a degree in physics, he began a career as a materials scientist, and later they moved to Bethesda MD. The majority of his career was at Versar Inc. He enjoyed many weekends playing tennis at the Landon Tennis Club, and spending time with family and good friends. He loved to fish, vacation in Cape Hatteras NC, and play bridge and trivial pursuit. His passion for photography began in Bethesda with a dark room in the basement.

After retirement, Larry and Helen relocated from Bethesda to Cambridge MD. With newly found time, Larry added many new interests. He was an active member of the Cambridge Yacht Club, the Cambridge Historical Society and the Cambridge Sail and Power Squadron. His passion for birding and photography are evident through his beautiful prints. He and Helen loved to travel, particularly to England and Wales, and to explore the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. He also made beautiful pieces of furniture through his love of woodworking. Later he developed a passion for genealogy, resulting in a two-book family history which will forever be treasured.

Most of all, Larry was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He believed in always doing the right thing and led by example with generosity, compassion, attention and love, all delivered with well-placed humor. He encouraged a tight family and the importance of gatherings, many hosted in his home on the water and well documented in photos. Larry is survived by Helen, his two children: Jeffrey Davies (and Julie) of Fox Chapel PA and Anne Scherer (and Kurt) of Potomac Falls VA; and six grandchildren: Robert, Lauren, and Madison Davies, and Hailey, Catherine, and Brian Scherer.

If friends wish to send memorial donations in memory of Larry in lieu of flowers, the family suggest sending them to the Fisher House Foundation 12300 Twinbrook Pkwy, Rockville, MD 20852  or the Salvation Army 200 Washington St, Cambridge, MD 21613.

The funeral services are private. Larry will be interred at The Franklin Cemetery in Franklin, PA.
