Leon M. Peters, 91, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, March 24, 2025 at Autumn Lake Chesapeake Woods in Cambridge.
He was born in Cambridge on March 11, 1934 and was a son of Leon and Madeline Andrews Peters. He graduated from Cambridge High School class of 52.
After High School he joined the Navy and was attached to two destroyers during the Korean War. Returning to Cambridge, he worked as a contract procurement officer for the State of Maryland. On August 5, 1960, he married the former Connie Newcomb who passed away on August 4, 2017. He joined the 29th Division of the Maryland National Guard. His unit was activated and served through Desert Storm. His son William, who was serving aboard the USS Saratoga, and himself were the only two Father and Son on active duty, in theater.
He was an active member of the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Company, A lifetime member of the VFW, was a member of the Ruritan and a member of the Dorchester Arts Society. Leon and his wife were staunch active members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and later, Leon and his son Shawn, attended Faith Fellowship Church.
A Loyal Servant to Christ. A Great and Faithful Husband, and a Military Warrior, A Friend a Friend would love to have. A Loving, Caring, Role Model as a Dad, grandfather, great grandfather and a leader in his community.
He is survived by a son William Jeffrey Peters and wife Lori of Pace, FL, two granddaughters Lauren Jenkins and Kimberly Hancock and husband John and a grandson Jeffrey Peters, four great grandchildren Morgan Jenkins, Xavier Hancock, Andrew Jenkins and Leon Hancock. Besides his parents and his wife Mr. Peters is preceded in death by a son Shawn Peters who passed away on January 19, 2025.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 11am at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Faith Baptist Fellowship, 1312 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
