Leon G. Travers, Sr., 72, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Hoopers Island on May 4, 1940 to the late Bennie G. and Adelle Meekins Travers, Sr.
Mr. Travers finished the 8th grade and started crabbing as a young boy. He moved to San Antonio, TX and worked as a construction foreman for many years. He moved back to Cambridge and retired from Wal-Mart Tire and Lube. He enjoyed crabbing and fishing.
He is survived by four daughters Laura Laird and partner William Cruz of Cambridge, Kathy Mowbray of East New Market, Donna Barnes and partner Jeff Prahl of Cambridge and Nikki Jackson of Florida, ex-wife, Betty Travers of Cambridge, three sisters, Geraldine Travers Brown of Florida, Daisy Travers Laroach of Alabama and Sherry Randell of Florida, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two special friends, JoAnn Tieder and Doris Spies. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Leon G. Travers, Jr. a brother, Bennie Travers, Jr. and a grandson Joseph Preston.
Pallbearers will be Wendell Travers, Donald Bell, Michael Laird, Jr. Michael Hastings, Nick Bell, Ricky Rockwell and honorary pallbearer Larry Phillips.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at noon at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Deacon Wendell Travers officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Cambridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
