Leslie Mildred Dreier, 94, of Kingsville Md passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at Coastal Hospice by the Lake in Salisbury MD. Mildred was born in a row house on Fait Ave in Baltimore City. She spent the next 10 years of her life in Catonsville MD at her grandfather’s home. Her parents then moved to various row homes in Baltimore City. She was born June 10, 1923. Mil was the daughter of the late Leslie Linwood Deickman and Viola Koepper. Both her grandfathers were from Germany and walked to the Enoch Pratt Library to read the German newspapers. Her uncle owned stables in the harbor and had horse drawn carts that held fruits and veg for sale. One of them is in the SMITHSONIAN. Her nine aunts and uncles all lived with her parents at various times and shaped her compassion for caring about her relatives, their lives and extended family members. She met her husband while they both worked for a dairy. She married Frederick W Dreier in S.C right before he left for WWII. She was 19. She was offered a scholarship to the MARYLAND INSTITUTE OF ART.but turned it down to go to work. She worked at a bank with her 2 other sisters during the war-she was an administrative assistant and excellent at short-hand. Milly started a long career working for the Bd of Education in Balto. Co in the Science and Math dept. under the leadership of Helen Hale, Sam Herman, Ben Poscover, John Hecht and Don Webb.
She belonged to Hiss United Methodist Church for over 60 years, located in Parkville Md , raised her children there . She was an avid reader, trail guide for Oregon Ridge Nature Center, Sunday school teacher, camper, loved birds, plants and keeping the history of her German immigrant family alive. She kept in touch with all the cousins, 2 and 3rd and could tell you how all fit into the fabric of the family. However, her most passionate, lifelong activity was her ART. She breathed it! It had a life of its own with her. She taught it, she took lessons, she took classes at the Md Institute,. She painted with well known Baltimore artists such as Reggie Watkins and Franz Schuler from the Schuler School of Fine Arts . Mil was a member of the Balto. Watercolor Society, the Charcoal Club, the Watermark Gallery and numerous others. Her paintings hang in her beloved church, with her relatives, friends and strangers that bought them. Landscapes of old, worn barns, and Brilliant colored skies inspired her.
Leslie Mildred named after her father whom she dearly loved and lost early in a crane accident at Bethlehem Steel is survived by 3 children-Robyn Dreier White and husband Morgan of Salisbury, F. Kirk Dreier and wife Winnie of Beckeysville MD, and JoAnn Dreier of Parkville, MD, grandchildren, Shannon, Danny, Garrett and Taylor, sister Dorothy Engler of Glen Burnie, sister Jean Grace and husband Charlie of Fallston and 1 brother, Leslie Deickman Jr,plus, numerous cousins and their children. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2009, and her baby brother Robert “Bob” Deickman of Ocean Pines in 2017.A service at Hiss United Methodist Church , 8700 Harford Road Parkville, Md 21234 is planned on September 16, 2017 at 1 pm.
