Luveda Love Powell

Luveda Love Powell, 90, of Easton, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at her cottage at the William Hill Manor in Easton on Monday January 5, 2009. She was born in Gay, West Virginia on August 14, 1918, and was a daughter of the late Grover C. and Myrtle Evans Young.

She attended Ripley High School in West Virginia and graduated from St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, West Virginia as a Registered Nurse in 1941, also attending Morris Harvey College and Wake Forest. On June 23, 1945 she was married to Dr. Charles Washington Powell in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Charleston, WV. Dr. Powell practiced General Medicine in Charleston for 20 years and passed his boards in both Psychiatry and Neurology. They moved to Cambridge in 1963 where Dr. Powell was Clinical Director at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center. Dr. Powell retired in 1970 and they made their home at Paw Paw Acres in Cambridge until he passed away on January 13, 1982. She was a Communicant of Old Trinity Church at Church Creek as well as a member of the Cambridge Yacht Club. Mrs. Powell had been a resident at the William Hill Manor in Easton since November of 1997 where she passed away on Monday evening.

Survivors include a son Dr. William Richard Powell of Sao Paulo, Brazil, two granddaughters Mrs. Eli Powell Niepoky of Atlanta, GA and Ms. Emily Love Blackburn of Malvern, PA, four great grandchildren Paul, Nicole, Molly and Andersson, and two sisters Mrs. Edith Shinn of Ripley, WV and Mrs. Charlotte Mays of Parkersburg, WV.

A funeral service will be held at Old Trinity Church at Church Creek on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Old Trinity Church with the Rev. Robert Gribbon officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining Churchyard. Memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Powell's name to Old Trinity Church, P.O. Box 157, Church Creek, MD 21622. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
