Margaret E. Barnes, 97 of Rhodesdale, formerly of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Homestead Manor in Denton. She was born in New Sewickley Township, PA on September 20, 1914 and was a daughter of the late Rev. Theodore F. and Henrietta Gengnagel Fischer.
Mrs. Barnes was raised in Pennsylvania and moved to Cambridge in 1932. In 1933 she graduated from Cambridge High School. In 1935 she graduated from Cambridge Maryland Hospital School of Nursing as a RN. On April 18, 1936 she married C. Norman Barnes. He passed away on October 13, 1982. Mrs. Barnes practiced nursing at Cambridge Maryland Hospital and some at Eastern Shore State Hospital and retired in 1973. She was a member of the Nurses Alumni Association.
She is survived by two sons Paul N. Barnes and wife Sally of Rhodesdale and John W. Barnes and wife Cheri of Cambridge, nine grandchildren, a sister Dorothy Ewing of Easton and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Barnes is preceded in death by a son Frederick E. Barnes, three brothers Henry Fischer, Theodore Fischer and Frederick Fischer.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock with Rev. Fred Flatten officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Homestead Manor, 410 Colonial Drive, Denton, MD 21629. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
