Marlene M. Hubbard, 84, of Cambridge passed away at UMSMC at Easton on Monday, August 8, 2016 with her loving family by her side. She had been in declining health for the last several months. She was born in Syracuse, New York on March 17, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Harold Leo and Eleanor F. Thompson Meyer.
As a young girl, her family moved to Havre de Grace, Maryland where she graduated from Havre de Grace High School in 1948. Among her many achievements, she was homecoming queen in high school and college, she was first runner up in the 1948 Miss Maryland Pageant ,and she attended Washington College graduating with honors in 1952 with a degree in biology.
It was at Washington College that she met her husband the late Milton "Mickey" Hubbard, Jr. They settled in Cambridge where she was a teacher for 35 years, teaching at several Dorchester County schools such as Cambridge Junior High School, St. Clair Elementary School and Sandy Hill Elementary School. She retired in 1994, and kept active with the Dorchester Retired Educators, serving as President for two years as well as on the Board of Directors for many years. She also was in charge of the Sunshine Club until two years ago. She was also a member of the Maryland Retired School Personnel, National Education Association, and a 50 year member of Grace United Methodist Church.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, teacher and friend who dedicated her life to selflessly serving others. She is survived by sons Scott Hubbard of Cambridge, Mark Hubbard and wife Dawn of East New Market, Matthew Hubbard and companion Brandy of Cambridge and daughter Mindy Cannon and husband Ray of Seaford, DE. Also surviving are grandsons Adam Hubbard of Hurlock, Ben and Nick Hubbard of Cambridge, and Zachary Cannon of Seaford, DE., a brother Wayne and wife Edie Meyer of Ocean Pines, many cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by several aunts and a grandson Grant Hubbard.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to a charity of one's choice.
