Mary "Addie" Dabney

Mary "Addie" Dabney, 96, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, September 23, 2013 in Kinston, NC where she had made her home for the past eight years. Born in Marion, NC on August 24, 1917, she was the oldest of eight children born to James A. and Martha J. McKelvey. The family moved to Maryland in 1927 and settled in the North Dorchester area.

Mary graduated from Hurlock High School in 1935 and moved to Cambridge in 1936 after marrying Norman J. Rawleigh. In the early 1950s she worked as an accountant and sewing teacher for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. From 1954 -1958 she was employed by the Cambridge City Police Dept. as a school crossing guard on the corner of Sunburst Highway and LeCompte St. From 1958 until her retirement in 1985 she was the receptionist/secretary for Dr. John Mace. After retiring she became an active volunteer at the Lutheran Mission Shop in Cambridge. She was an active member of St Paul's United Methodist Church for over twenty-five years.

Her husband of 41 years, Norman Rawleigh passed away in 1977. In 1995 she married Charles F. Dabney, who died in 2004.

She is survived by two children, James W. Rawleigh of Newark, DE, and Linda R. Andrews of Cambridge; six grandchildren, the youngest of whom resides in Kinston, NC and eleven great grandchildren; three brothers, Paul McKelvey and Joseph McKelvey of Pennsville, NJ, and Philip McKelvey of Cambridge. In addition to her two husbands she was preceded in death by her daughter in law, Millie T. Rawleigh, and son in law, Donald E. Andrews, two sisters, Melva Whaley and Irene Malcom; and two brothers, Thomas McKelvey and George McKelvey.

Burial will be at the discretion of the immediate family. A memorial service will be held at St Paul's United Methodist Church on October 11, at 1:00 PM. Family and friends will be received in the hour prior to the service and at a luncheon reception following the service. In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to St Paul's UMC, 204 Maryland Ave, Cambridge, MD or to one's charity of choice.
