Mary Ellen B. Hughes, 86, of Cambridge, passed away early Sunday morning, August 15, 2010 at the Mallard Bay Care Center, where she had resided since February of 2007.
She was born at Waddell's Corner on July 1, 1924 and raised on a farm near Federalsburg. Her parents were the late Leon Dale and Claudia Thomas Bradley. She was a 1941 graduate of Federalsburg High School and attended Kings College in Wilmington, DE for several years in the late 1940's. As a young woman she did secretarial work at several local businesses. Religion has always been a major part of her life, in particular reaching out to children. For many years she conducted "Good News Clubs" around the Eastern Shore and was also employed as a field representative for Child Evangelism Fellowship.
She was married to Sidney Hughes on June 6, 1992 and until his death in August of the same year, she made her home in Seaford, DE. She maintained a home in Heritage Park at East New Market from 1988 until July of 2006, at which time she moved to Hurlock Meadows. In September of 2009 she was honored to be inducted into the "Mallard Bay Hall of Fame".
Mrs. Hughes was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hurlock. She enjoyed photography, crafts, and had some artistic talent, mainly in drawing and pastels.
She is survived by several cousins; Kenny Thomas of Cambridge, John Thomas of Salem, Ann Carol Moore of Naples, FL, Rebecca Tolley of Seaford, DE, Jimmy Harper and William Harper, both of Rhodesdale.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Pastor Don Reynolds and Rev. Tim Merki. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday during the hour preceding the service. Burial will follow in Unity-Washington Cemetery in Hurlock.
