Mary Louise Mitchell, 95, of East New Market passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2024 at Rayland Acres in Trappe. She was born December 30, 1928 in Bucktown, to William W. and Susie W. Handley.
Mary Louise, a 1946 graduate of Cambridge High School, married her high school sweetheart, Raymond E. Mitchell on January 29, 1947, maintaining a strong bond for 74 years until his passing in 2021. She retired from Delmarva Power and Light in 1989 with “39 years 10 months” service to the Cambridge Division office.
Mary Louise and Raymond were devoted members of Souls Harbor Church of God, where they served multiple capacities. She was active in the church Ladies Auxiliary’s fund-raising projects and taught children’s Sunday School classes for many years in addition to helping with meals for the hospitality ministry.
Mary Louise and Raymond spent countless summer days enjoying boating activities with the family. Later, they enjoyed group bus trips and traveling the country in their RV with the camping club. She was devoted to taking care of her home, her flower beds and loving her family. Her attention to detail, organization and note taking are legendary.
Mary Louise is survived by her daughter, Brenda Nelson (Allen), three granddaughters, Sheri Aybar (Victor) of Manchester, Lisa Kumpar (Paul) of Westminster, Bobbie Jo Shorter of Cambridge and six great-grandsons, Paul Allen and Ryan Kumpar (Mackenzie), Joshua (Emma) Jeremiah, Judah Aybar and Mitchell Shorter, great great-granddaughter Olimpia Louise, brother Carroll C. Handley (Joann), and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sister, Anna Mae Outten, brothers William “Bill”, Jr., David, Sr. and Paul Handley and her son R. Stephen Mitchell.
The family deeply appreciates the dedication and love shown by all those at Rayland Acres.
A 12:00 PM funeral service will be held on Thursday July 11, 2024 at Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Dr. Bruce Cooke and Pastor Chris Pettit officiating. Pallbearers will be her great-grandsons. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Rayland Acres, 29160 Krismor Ct.,Trappe, MD 21673 or Souls Harbor Church of God, 718 Peachblossom Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21612.
