Mary Isabelle "Belle" Wilkinson Mowbray, 95, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in Aberdeen, MD on September 9, 1915 and was a daughter of the late Irvin Webster Fulmer Wilkinson and Laura May Street Wilkinson.
Mrs. Mowbray was raised and attended primary schools in Aberdeen, MD and later attended Cambridge High School after the family moved to Cambridge in 1930. She was an outstanding athlete in school and a star player on the 1933 Cambridge High School basketball team. In 1936 she went to work for Phillips Packing Company as a secretary at the main office. She also worked for several years as a beauty shop inspector for the State of Maryland. But, she spent many years as a housewife devoted to raising her three children. On March 16, 1935 in New Jersey she married the former Cambridge Mayor, Calvin Wray Mowbray, Sr. He passed away on July 5, 1988. A She enjoyed the YMCA swim group in her later years. Mrs. Mowbray was a member of Zion United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Crescent Class and the Ruth Stewart Circle. She also received her 50 year membership certificate from the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron, in December of 1992, a member of Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, Dorchester Historical Society and the Cambridge young homemakers.A
She is survived by two sons Calvin Wray Mowbray, Jr. of Westminster and William W. Mowbray of Cambridge, a daughter Janet Belle Redifer of Willards, two granddaughters Donna Neal of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Becky Jo Dalfonso of Willards, four great grandchildren Belinda Sawyer of Newark, MD, Christopher Sawyer of Cambridge, Austin and Megan Dalfonso both of Willards. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Mowbray is preceded in death by a sister Ethel May Esch and five brothers Edwin Wilkinson, Louis Wilkinson, Alan Wilkinson, Irvin Wilkinson and Roy Wilkinson.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
