Mary C. Phillips

Mary Lucinda Cheesman Phillips, 93, of Cambridge passed away on March 8, 2012 at Chesapeake Woods Center. She was born in East New Market on September 7, 1918 and was a daughter of the late James Monroe and Mary Sellers Cheesman.

She attended schools in Dorchester County. On September 30, 1939 she married Wm. Leonard Phillips. He passed away on June 10, 1965. Mrs. Phillips retired from the Dorchester County School System. She enjoyed her family, friends, gardening and cooking. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Grace United Methodist Church since April 10, 1960.

She is survived by five children Harold L. Phillips (Naomi) of Cambridge, Mary E. Airey of Cambridge, Judy Davenport (James) of Hurlock, Lena Paulsen (Roger) of Vienna, Virginia and Doris Quidas (John) of Trappe, 11 grandchildren Cathy Ryan, Danny Airey, Mark Airey, Robin Abbott, Hope Airey, Harold Phillips, Jr., Angela Thomas, Lanette Tyler, James Alan Davenport, Lisa Bryan and Kim Williams, 16 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, six sisters Shirley McCready of Cambridge, Dot Ruark of Hoopers Island, Agnes Edge of Cambridge, Hilda Gemeny of East New Market, Betty Wheatley of Hudson and Audrey Harding of East New Market and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Phillips is preceded in death by a sister Irene Layton, five brothers Thomas Cheesman, James Cheesman, Albert Cheesman, William Cheesman and Clarence Cheesman.

Pallbearers will be Danny Airey, Mark Airey, Harold L. Phillips, Jr., James W. Phillips, Jr., Edward Cheesman and Marty Cheesman.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00.
