Mary Elizabeth Cannon Ratcliffe, 94, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born in Fishing Creek on March 28, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Walter Bain Cannon and Mariah Eva Lewis Cannon.
Mrs. Ratcliffe graduated from Hoopers Island High School with the class of 1937, where she was valedictorian. She was the wife of Charlie H. (Buck) Ratcliffe, who passed away on October 31, 1990. She grew up attending Hoosier Memorial Church with her family and in 1984 became a member of Zion United Methodist Church. Mrs. Ratcliffe is survived by two daughters Mary Ellen Webster (and husband Wallace J.) of Hebron and Trudy Katherine Leager (and husband John H.) of Easton, a sister June Cannon Alt of Baltimore, four grandchildren Terry L. Webster, Jay R. Webster (and wife Betty), Bobbi Jo Webster and John H Leager, Jr., two great grandchildren Devin Webster and Megan Wise, and several nephews. Besides her parents and her husband is Mrs. Ratcliffe is preceded in death by two brothers J. Paul Cannon and W. Emmett Cannon and a sister Bertrude Cannon Curlander.
Pallbearers will be John Leager, Sr., Jay Webster, Mark Alt, John Leager, Jr., Devin Webster and Garrett Alt.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
