Maryland Darlene Spies

Maryland Darlene Spies, 57 of Cambridge, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Friday, June 24, 2011. She was born at Andrews on May 29, 1954, and was a daughter of the late William Parks and Monnie Mae Mills Abbott, Sr.

She attended Crapo Elementary School and also South Dorchester High School and was first married to William Raymond Kimball on November 14, 1975. He passed away on March 8, 1992. On June 19, 1993 she was married to Elmer Spies. She had worked at Ocean Odyssey, the Eastern Shore Hospital Center, Clayton's Seafood and later at Mallard Bay Care Center where she had worked for ten years. She enjoyed playing Bingo and spending time with her family. She had been in failing health for several years when she passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center on Friday.

Survivors include her husband Elmer Spies of Cambridge, one daughter Tanya Griffith and her husband Gene Griffith of Trappe, two step children Alice Spies and Michelle Harris both of Cambridge, seven grandchildren including a granddaughter she was particularly close to Ja'Kerria Pritchett. She is also survived by five sisters Shirley Hicks of Cambridge Carolyn Simmons of Toddville, Barbara Willey and her husband Carl Willey of Wingate, Marie Dryden of Cambridge and Diane Jones and her husband James Jones of Cambridge, four brothers Harvey Abbott, Sr. of Cambridge, Parks Junior Abbott of Toddville, James Abbott of Manchester, Tennessee, Wylie E. Abbott and his wife Beverly Abbott of Cambridge, six step brothers and sisters Betty Hasting of Cambridge, Mae Fitzhugh of Cambridge, Lottie King of Cambridge, Joy Jackson of Cambridge, Harold Abbott of Cambridge and Loretta Dibble of Cambridge, two aunts Lillie Warfield and Jeannie Thomas and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Ramona Lankford and a brother William Parks Abbott, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Linda Jones officiating. Interment will follow the Wesley Church Cemetery at Andrews. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 to help defray costs. Pallbearers will be Wylie Abbott, James Jones, Craig Elzey, Jr., Diane Jones, Frankie Warner and Medford Kimball. Harvey Abbott, Sr. will be an honorary bearer.
