Maurice C. Lewis, Jr

Maurice C. Lewis, Jr., 83 of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. He was born in Cambridge on February 25, 1926, and was a son of the late Maurice C. Lewis, Sr. and the late Mary Etta Fleming Lewis.

He attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy as a medic in WW II and was stationed in Africa. He was first married to the former Eugenia Mace Jett on July 22, 1946. She passed away on June 18, 1987. Mr. Lewis had worked as a barber in Cambridge for a number of years and while working as a barber attended the University Of Baltimore School Of Law and received his law degree in 1970 and passed his bar exams in 1974. In 1970 he was elected as Dorchester Co. Register of Wills. In 1974 he was appointed Assistant States Attorney under States Attorney William B. Yates. In 1975 Mr. Lewis was sworn in as the States Attorney for Dorchester Co. and served from 1974 until 1978. In 1978 Mr. Lewis ran for the Maryland State Senate against State Senator Frederick C. Malkus. He was a member of Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post # 7460 VFW, the Dorchester Co. Bar Association, and had served on the Veterans Recognition Committee, and was a former member of Cambridge Lodge # 1272 B.P.O.E. Mr. Lewis was married to the former Connie Brohawn on December 18, 1987. He had been in failing health for the past six months when he passed away at his home on Tuesday evening.

Survivors include his devoted wife and soulmate of 21 years Connie S. Lewis of Cambridge, five daughters Kathryn Seifert and her husband Richard Seifert of Parsonsburg, Cynthia Love and her husband Dale V. Love of Trappe, Linda Eaton of Ridgely, Marcia Palmer of McHenry, MD and Nancy Foxwell of Cambridge, a step son Hugh Brohawn of Hurlock, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, 1 step granddaughter and 1 step grandson, a sister in law Sandy Hurley of Cambridge and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Charles L. Lewis.

A funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon at 12:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Joseph Harmon officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home and during the hour before the service. Pallbearers will be Tom Spicer, Steve Tull, Arthur Eaton III, Steve Aaron, Hugh Brohawn and Richard Eckardt. Honorary bearers will be the Dorchester Co. Bar Association.
