Michael Travers

Michael Travers, 75 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. He was born at Fishing Creek on May 14, 1934, and was a son of the late William Vernon and Alice Pauline Creighton Travers.

He attended schools at Hoopers Island. As a young man he had worked as a waterman trot lining and oystering. Mr. Travers later worked at the Eastern Shore State Hospital for 16 years in the Maintenance Department until he retired on July 1, 1999. After that he had worked part time at Simmons Center Market and also at Terrapin Fish House at Fishing Creek. On May 6, 1979 he was married to the former Beverly Ann Handley. He was a lifelong member of Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose, and was also a former member of the Sons of the American Legion, and had also been a member of the Dorchester Co. Democratic Club. Mr. Travers loved the water and enjoyed getting together with his family and friends. He had been in failing health since October and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital for two weeks when he passed away on Wednesday morning.

Survivors include his wife Beverly G. Travers of Cambridge, one step daughter Deborah C. Whitaker and her husband Chip Whitaker of Centreville, three step sons David Handley, Jr. and his wife Darlene Handley of Trappe, Daniel P. Handley and his special friend Yvonne Habliston of Princess Anne and Douglas E. Handley and his wife Joanne Handley of Baltimore, nine step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters Faye Williams and her husband Ronnie Williams of Salisbury, Peggy Cannon and her husband Timmie Cannon of Cambridge and Bonnie Fitzhugh of Cambridge, one brother Calvin Travers and wife Joane Travers of Fishing Creek, one God son Jay Jones of Cambridge and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Ruth Travers, Leroy Travers, William Travers, Jr., Betty Hiser, Doris Parks and Olive Truitt, and one step son William D. "Billy" Handley.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM at Grace United Methodist Church on Race Street in Cambridge with the Rev. Jay A. Hurley and the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Interment will take place at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Pallbearers will be Brad Walters, Rick Travers, Jr., Ryan Travers, Rob Travers, Randy Travers, Ricky Fitzhugh, Eddie Morris and Wally Reed. Honorary pallbearers will be David Handley, Jr., Daniel P. Handley, Douglas E. Handley, Chip Whitaker, Ricky Travers, Sr., Russell Hibble, Wendell Travers, Douglas Walters, Milton "Joe" Truitt, Jr, Justin Todd and William Fitzhugh, Sr. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, c/o Priscilla McGlaughlin, P.O.
