Michael A. Wingo

Michael A. Wingo, 67 of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. He was born in Baltimore on June 29, 1942 and was a son of Thelma Adams Wingo and the late Henry L. Wingo.

Mike graduated from Cambridge High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 22, 1960 until June 28, 1963.  In the late 1960's he had served on the Maryland State Police. He later worked as a DJ and news director at WCEM Am & FM in Cambridge for several years. Mike had also been the musical director of Sing Out Cambridge. He later worked as a dispatcher for Cambridge City Police and also for Dorchester Co. Fire Control for about ten years. On November 19, 1983 he was married to the former Paula Newcomb. In 1985 they moved to Florida where he worked for the Ft. Meyers Police Dept. as a dispatcher. They moved back to Cambridge in 1992. From September of 1992 until May of 1993 he worked as a bus driver for Dillon's Bus Service. In May of 1993 Mike went to work for the Dorchester Co. Sheriff's Office where he worked as a dispatcher for the Sherriff's Office as well as the 911 center. He was promoted to warrant officer at the Sheriff's Office, a post which he was still holding. Mike had served as an active member of Rescue Fire Co. for several years. For a number of years Paula and Mike enjoyed working with greyhounds, which they rescued and also enjoyed taking their greyhounds to visit patients in various local nursing homes. Mike was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge where he helped take care of the sound system for the Praise Band. Mike had been in failing health for several months when he passed away at his home on Wednesday morning.

Survivors include his wife Paula A. Wingo of Cambridge, his mother Thelma A. Wingo of Cambridge, one sister June Rose Wingo-Carbone and her husband Ray Carbone of Steuben, Maine, one brother Paul A. Wingo and his companion Laura Lee Dillon of Olney, MD, two nephews Adam Wingo and Chekota Wingo. He was preceded in death by his father.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Maryland Avenue in Cambridge with the Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Richard Hargis, 205 Maryland Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613. Pallbearers will be members of the Dorchester Co. Sheriff's Office.
