Milton “Joe” Truitt, Jr., 75, of Cambridge passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 with his loving family by his side. He was born on April 7, 1945 and raised in Crapo, Maryland. He was the son of the late Milton and Olive Travers Truitt.
Joe graduated from South Dorchester High School class of 1964. On May 9, 1969, he married the former Kathy Pete. He served in the Army National Guard. Joe worked for National Can Corporation after high school and continued employment until it closed in 1982. He then went to work for Glen Ruark Construction and later went into business for himself as a general contractor. In 1996, he went to work for Chesapeake Youth Center as the Maintenance Director. He retired in February 2010 from Adventist Health Care (formerly Chesapeake Youth Center).
Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends and especially loved camping at his home away from home near Chincoteague. He also loved to cook for his family and friends. He attended Open Bible Church, when his health allowed. He was a member of the American Legion Post #91 for 52 years.
He is survived by his wife Kathy Truitt of Cambridge, two daughters Dawn Gootee and husband Bobby of Fishing Creek and Jenny Jones and husband Scott of Fishing Creek, four grandchildren Lauren and Luke Gootee and Lainey and Caden Jones, a sister Judy Rippons of Fenwick, DE, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Larry Gootee, Doug Walters, Scott Jones, Bobby Gootee, Charles (Amos) Bromwell, Bicky Roche, Luke Gootee and Caden Jones.
A walk through visitation will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021 from 6pm to 8pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 11 am at Open Bible Church with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Open Bible Church, 1619 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
