Nancy Johnson Hughes passed away on September 25, 2016 at McElveen Manor Assisted Living. She moved to South Carolina five years ago and was a resident of Brookdale Assisted Living before transferring to McElveen Manor eleven months ago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dennis Hughes, who passed away in 2000. Born November 9, 1921, at Aireys, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Maude Hunter Smith Johnson and Jacob Edward Johnson. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church before coming a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cambridge.
Nancy was an avid reader and loved books. She enjoyed living in the East New Market Senior Apartments for 10 years before moving to South Carolina. She loved quilting, sewing and crafts. Her family will enjoy the many homemade gifts and Christmas ornaments for generations to come.
She is survived by her four children, Judith Hughes McMahan and her husband Charles of East New Market, MD; Linda Hughes Nock and her husband William of Sumter, SC; William D. Hughes, Jr. and his wife Susan of Charlotte, NC and John H. Hughes and wife Mary of Cary, NC, four grandchildren Christopher W. Hughes, Susan N. Clark and husband Scott, Melinda H. Leonard and Meredith N. Partridge, three great grandchildren, Anna Wallace Clark, William Hunter Hughes Clark, and Nancy Stewart Partridge.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Annabelle Mowbray, Rosalie Lindner, Edward Johnson, Beverly Cusick, Doris Johnson and Russell Johnson.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 11 am at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Bonnie Shively officiating.
Expressions of Sympathy may be made by making memorial offerings in her memory to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
