Nina Clara (Smith) Travers

April 14, 1921 — January 31, 2017

Nina Smith Travers of Woolford, MD passed away on January 31, 2017 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Dinah and Terry Groves surrounded by her family.

Born on April 14, 1921 in Robbins MD, she was the daughter of the late Solomon Smith and Ida Burton Smith.  She was raised in Robbins and attended school at Robbins Schoolhouse. She was a lifelong member of Bounds United Methodist Church in Robbins, MD until its closing.

Mrs. Travers married L. Edwin Travers on June 27, 1945.  Mr. Travers passed away on November 8, 1992.

Mrs. Travers had worked at P. Frankel’s, a former downtown Cambridge business for several years before she and her husband moved to Ephrata, PA for his job. When they returned to Dorchester County in 1953, she worked as Manager of the Thrifty Shop, Women's Clothing Store in Cambridge and then Salisbury, MD. She then worked as Manager of the Robin Hood Shop for the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary until she retired to care for her first grandchild in 1978.

She was one of the first members of the Linkwood Homemakers and made lifelong friends.  Nina loved her family and enjoyed the large family gatherings that frequently occurred throughout the year.  She enjoyed the friendship and social gathering that occurred at the South Dorchester Senior Center at Golden Hill, MD. She loved being outside and took pride in her garden and flowers.

In the mid, 1960s, Mr. And Mrs. Travers opened the teenage weekend nightclub, “The Carousel”.  It provided a chaperoned environment for teens to gather and an opportunity for young band members to have an audience for their music. It also provided local bands opportunity to grow and perform outside of Dorchester County as their talent grew.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen and husband Tim Carpenter of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Dinah and husband Terry Groves of Woolford, MD; four granddaughters: Jessica Darrow and husband Jason of Quantico, VA, Nicole Evans and husband Chris of Woolford, MD, Katie King and husband James of Gambrills, MD, and Meghan Carpenter of Annapolis, MD.; five great-grandchildren: Dylan Perry, Logan Darrow, Nina Darrow, Cooper King and Garrett Evans; nephew Allen Smith Jr. (Jacqueline) ; nieces Carmen Kuhn (Kevin), and Violet Jackson and many great nieces and great nephews. A major joy in her life was her extended family.

Preceeding her in death besides her parents and husband, two brothers Allen Smith Sr. and his wife Kathleen, Wilson Smith; sister Ruby Moore and husband Gordy, two infant sisters Ruth and Bernette Smith; and Brother-in-law Vincent Travers and wife Olive; nephews Jerol D. Moore, Cyril Jackson and David Travers.

Pallbearers will be: Darren Jackson, J. Don Moore, Allen Smith Jr., Toby Adams, Trey Smith and Kevin Kuhn.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 10 am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family receive friends one hour prior to the service.
