Mr. Eckels attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1959. Norman was first married to Bonnie Shockley Foxwell. He went to work with Tri-County Trenching when they went into business in 1975 and has worked with them ever since. Norman enjoyed spending time with his family, working on his 1971 Corvette and spending time with his three dachsunds, Missy, Duke and Freckles, hunting, fishing and playing golf with his friends. He was a member and Past Governor of the Moose Lodge. He had been in failing health since July of 2008 when he passed away on Tuesday evening
Survivors include his loving wife Margaret "Jackie" Keppler Eckels of Cambridge, his devoted children Cheri L. Burton and her husband Mark L. Burton of Cambridge, and Norman L. Eckels III and his wife Kara L. Eckels of East New Market, one grandson Brandon P. Burton and his fiancAC.e Krystal Robinson of Cambridge, three granddaughters Courtney L. Travers and her husband Harold Travers, Jr. of Cambridge, Allyson L. Eckels and Alyssa L. Eckels both of East New Market, his step mother Connie Eckels of Baltimore, four step daughters Rose M. Brohawn of Chestertown, Laurie R. Whiston of Cambridge, Chris R. Hett of Georgia and Abby R. Norris of Florida and eight step grandchildren Jason Cantville and his wife Amanda Cantville, Caroline Brohawn, Jackson Brohawn, Kyle Foster, Nick Foster, Jill Messer, Alison Anthony, Maddie Norris, one step great granddaughter Cheyanne "Mimi" McMurphy, three sisters Patricia L. Webster of Linkwood, Vannessa Y. Cantrell of Florida, Susan Yori of Baltimore, two brothers Donald Eckels of Baltimore and Richard Eckels of Westminster and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Kenneth Eckels and his step father Leon Webster.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. David Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802, or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Honorary pallbearers will be Clifford O. Collison, Bobby Wheatley, Chris Collison, Sr., Danny Adshead, Greg Bryan, Billy Vorwald, John Newcomb, Darren Bromwell and Gary Mills.
Norman L. Eckels, Jr., 67 of Cambridge, passed away at the home of his daughter Cheri on Tuesday March 31, 2009. He was born in Baltimore on November 7, 1941 and was a son of the late Norman Leslie Eckels, Sr., and the late Maude Elizabeth Green Eckels Webster.
