Norman R. Mowbray

Norman Roberson Mowbray, Jr., 70, of Bryantown, MD, died on October 12, 2010, at Civista Medical Center. Born September 16, 1940, in Cambridge, Maryland, he was the son of the late Norman R. Mowbray, Sr. and Josephine Twilley Mowbray. On February 9, 1964, he married Linda L. Smith, also of Cambridge. Mr. Mowbray graduated from Cambridge High School in 1958. He served in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1961. In July 1962, he entered the Maryland State Police Academy and upon graduation, he was assigned to the Waldorf Barrack as a road patrol trooper. After a brief assignment to the Princess Anne Detachment he returned to Waldorf where he progressed through the ranks including assignments at the Marlboro Post and Forestville Barrack. He was then assigned to the Aviation Division as a helicopter pilot and later to the command staff of Aviation at MSP Headquarters. Upon return to Field Operations, he was Commander of the Prince Frederick Barrack, and at the time of his retirement in 1985, he was Commander of the Waldorf Barrack. He obtained a fixed wing pilot license with an instrument rating and a helicopter pilot license. He attended the University of Maryland, College Park. After retirement from the MSP, he owned and operated a flight school at Hyde Field in Clinton, MD, and a helicopter aerial advertising business. He later was employed as an aviation consultant with Bell Helicopter. Mr. Mowbray was a member of the Maryland Troopers Association, the Maryland State Police Alumni Association, the American Legion, the Moose and the Cushman Club of America. He enjoyed flying his airplane and helicopter, and fishing, boating, gardening and reading. He and his wife traveled frequently, taking several trips each year. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda S. Mowbray. In addition to his parents and sister, Gloria M. Ketelsleger, who preceded him in death, he is survived by sisters Sarah M. Willey and her husband, David; Charlotte M. Lewis and her husband, John; brother-in-law, Christopher Betts; brothers & sisters in law Norman and Jeannie Smith; Ann and Charles Lewis, and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, with prayers at 6:00 pm, at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD. A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613. The interment will be private.Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 995, Waldorf, MD and/or, or the Maryland State Police Alumni Association, 18710 Falls Rd, Hampstead, MD 21074.
