Oliver Richard Carroll Gore, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 13, 2014. He was born in Cambridge on July 4, 1921 to the late Oliver Richard Carroll Gore, Sr. and Lillian Gray Gore.

Oliver graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1938 and graduated from University of Maryland in 1942. He also graduated from mid-shipman’s school at Columbia University, New York in 1943. Mr. Gore joined the United States Navy in 1943 where he served as a Lieutenant (JG) on the LST 288 that was present in Normandy, France on D-Day (June 6, 1944). He was presented the Medal of Jubilee of Liberty by France in commemoration of the Normandy Landings. He served the United States Navy for a total of two years. Oliver worked as a sanitarian for the Dorchester County Health Department for ten years before becoming self-employed as a Real Estate Broker for Tidewater Properties until his retirement in 2003. He also owned a monument and sandblasting business. Mr. Gore loved ballroom dancing and spending time with his family and friends, celebrating birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and holidays. He and his wife, Leah, often vacationed at the Outer Banks and the Delaware Shore. They also took yearly trips, throughout the country, to celebrate with his retired Navy friends and their wives. Oliver thoroughly enjoyed walking the marshes on his family’s property at Blackwater and was involved with muskrat trapping and processing. He often blessed his family with his culinary delights, especially a holiday turkey. Mr. Gore was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he was a junior warden, a senior warden, a Sunday school teacher and president of the Graveyard Association for many years. He was also a lifelong member of the Choptank Memorial Post #7460 VFW, the American Legion Post #91 and was very active in the Optimist Club and the Dorchester County Historical Society.

Mr. Gore is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Leah Orem Gore, over 60 nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a sister Jeanette Gore Scott, one niece Marsha C. Scott and two nephews Robert S. Earley and Louis Young.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Applegarth, Thomas Orem, Eric Applegarth, Chris Applegarth, Taylor Applegarth, Eric Dissinger, Jacob Dissinger and Bryan Applegarth. Honorary pallbearers will be Hubert Wright, Tom Adams, David Orem, Donald Cameron, James Montgomery and Richard Moore.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Pastor Bob White officiating. Interment will follow at the Christ Episcopal Churchyard. Family will receive friends a half hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
