Ollie Hunt Layton, 88, of East New Market passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Mallard Bay Care Center. He was born and raised in Dorchester County, Vienna, MD on April 15, 1926 and was the son of the late William Haddaway Layton and Bessie Neal Layton.

He attended Ravenwood School. Mr. Layton enlisted in the Maryland National Guard in 1943 and in the U.S. Army in 1945. He was honorably discharged in June of 1947. Upon returning from the Army, Mr. Layton began driving a truck for Service Trucking and the Adkins Company in Hurlock, where trucking would become his lifelong passion. He later became owner/operator of his own truck and pulled for Dew Line, Tri-State Trucking and Koski Trucking. He was happiest when driving his own truck and could handle his truck like no others.

Mr. Layton married Harriett Anne Fisher on September 2, 1950 and made their home in Hurlock until Mrs. Layton’s death in 1997. They were married for 47 years. Mr. Layton was a member of American Legion Post 243. He enjoyed yard work and maintained a beautiful garden for many years. He enjoyed watching old westerns and the Grand Old Opry, but his real enjoyment was his truck. In more recent years, Mr. Layton resided in East New Market with his companion Katheryn Hughes.

He is survived by his daughter Sue Tobat and husband Thomas Tobat, Jr. of Cabin Creek, two grandsons Thomas Tobat III and wife Karen of Preston, Kevin Tobat and wife Kimberly of Hurlock and his three beautiful great granddaughters.  Also surviving is a sister Louise Norris and Katheryn's children Wayne Hughes and Lori R. Bramble of Cambridge and Jacqueline Smith of East New Market. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Layton was preceded in death by his companion Katheryn Hughes, two sisters Clara McKnett and Hilda Willey and two brothers Haddaway Layton and Walter Layton.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Tobat, Jr., Thomas Tobat III, Kevin Tobat and Wayne Hughes.

At the request of Mr. Layton, all services will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to Pleasant Day Adult Day Care, 2474 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
