Philip Alexander Wozny

Philip A. Wozny, 89, of Cambridge, Md., passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016.  He was born July 19, 1927 in Nebraska to the late Alexander and Emma Cuba Wozny.

He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve on board the USS Indiana BB58 and was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 91 in Cambridge.

As a construction consultant and supervisor, he worked in locations around the world.

Projects have included work at the State Launching Facilities in the Mojave Desert, California, which involved the first rocket motor fuels for use in space.

The supervision and construction of towers and facilities for the testing of the atomic and hydrogen bombs in Mercury, Nevada and the Eniwetok Atoll in the South Pacific.

He also worked on the installation of communication facilities for the early warning system across Canada, Alaska, Greenland and Newfoundland; the system for the down range space programs on Grand Turk Island and Puerto Rico; the first Nav-Aid communication systems in Vietnam before the start of the war and the longest operating fiber optic system from Washington DC to New York City.

He designed and managed the installation, operation and configuration for the longest air to air communication across the Pacific, the prototype of which was constructed on Taylor's Island in 1957.

He retired from M. C. I. Telecommunications in 1989.  He enjoyed golfing and fishing with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Vickers Wozny, his children, Lynda Wozny of Denton, Eddie Wozny and his wife Becky, three grandchildren,  Brian Wozny and his wife Audrey, Sara Coulbourn and her husband Kevin,  Hunter Wozny  and two great grandchildren, River Wozny and Delaney Dodd, all of Cambridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Jerome Wozny and Francis Wozny of Nebraska.

A memorial service will be held on Friday,  September 23, 2016 at 12 pm at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery.  The Rev. William Davis officiating.
