Ray W. Moore

July 30, 1925 — October 6, 2015

Ray W. Moore, 90, passed away on October 6, 2015. He was born on Elliott’s Island, MD and lived most of his life in Cambridge, Maryland. Ten years ago he moved to Smithfield, VA to be near family.

He graduated from Vienna High School in 1942 and then graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1949 and received his Masters from Washington College. He taught in Baltimore County 5 years and then came to NDHS in 1955.  He was the principal there from 1967 till 1983. In retirement, he oystered on “pretty days”.

Mr. Moore served in the Army Air Corp during WW II and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

During his life time he was interested in boating, reading, and traveling, especially Europe and Florida. He had been a member of Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Hurlock and Cambridge Lion’s Club, the Art’s Center, Friends of the Library, The Dorchester Retired Teachers and the Cambridge Yacht Club. While in Smithfield he supported Golden Retriever Rescue, Education + Training (GRREAT).

Ray outlived his brothers Cecil, Sherwood, and Donald, his sister Erma Lewis, and his wife Anita. He is survived by his daughter Jane Jones, (Dale), grandchildren Valerie Savage (Nicholas) and Morgan Jones, and great-granddaughter, Adelyn.

Services will be held at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. on Sunday, November 8th at 3:00 pm with visitation an hour before, with Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating.
