Rebecca Bandy Ruark, 91, of Cambridge passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Mallard Bay Care Center, where she had been a patient for two weeks. She was born in Canebrake, West Virginia on January 15, 1923 and was a daughter of the late Hamilton R. Bogle Bandy and Elizabeth Quesenberry Bandy.
She grew up in Newhall, WV and in the 40's was recruited with 26 other girls to come to Maryland to work for Phillips Packing Company during WW II. She met and married Wm. Alvin Ruark, Sr., who was in the Navy at the time. She and Alvin were graduates of the Eastern Shore Hospital Center School of Nursing and worked at the hospital, retiring with over 60 years of service collectively. Mrs. Ruark loved to read and crochet before dementia and rheumatoid arthritis interfered with her hobbies.
Mrs. Ruark is survived by a daughter Carol R. Messick (Richard), two sons Wm. A. "Buddy" Ruark, Jr. (Joy) and J. Terry Ruark all of Cambridge, three grandchildren Laura R. Moore, Abby C. Messick and Todd H. Ruark, three great grandchildren, a brother Kelly J. Bandy of Newhall, WV, two sisters Lorraine B. Myers of Newhall, WV and Lenora A. Hubbard of Secretary and many nieces and nephews. She had a devoted friend and caregiver, Gloria Morgan, who made her last years at home pleasant and comfortable. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ruark was preceded in death by two brothers James Wm. Bandy and Kenneth Bandy and a sister Nellie B. Brewster.
A private graveside service will be held at the discretion of the family. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 91, Cambridge, MD 21613, who does so much good for others. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
