Rev. Douglas S. Albert, 77, of East New Market passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. He was born in Gujrat, Pakistan on December 13, 1938 to the late Sham and Doris Manley Albert.
Rev. Albert graduated from Rang Mahal Mission High School in Lahore, Pakistan. He attended Elon College in Elon, North Carolina, graduating in May, 1959, and in September married the former Lois Foor. Rev. Albert received a Bachelor’s of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1962 and was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ that same year. He earned a Master’s of Divinity from L.T.S. in 1975. Rev. Albert served as associate minister at Nativity United Church of Christ in Livonia, Michigan (1962 – 1964), and as pastor of St. Michael’s U.C.C. in Marshallville, Ohio (1964 – 1968), becoming a U.S. Citizen in 1966. He served as president of the Marshallville Lions Club and was an active member of the Marshallville Volunteer Fire Company. Rev. Albert then ministered at Emmanuel U.C.C. in Akron, Ohio (1968 – 1976), where he and Lois were part of the church’s bowling and softball teams. From 1976 – 1990, Rev. Albert was the minister at Grace U.C.C. in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, where he played on the church dartball team. Doug was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. In 1990, Rev. Albert moved to Cambridge, Maryland and served as pastor at Immanuel U.C.C. until 1994. He then became a chaplain for both Delaware Hospice (1995 – 2010) and Coastal Hospice (1998 – 2013), and volunteered for Coastal Hospice until his passing. Rev. Albert received the Robert V. Moss Excellence in Ministry Award from L.T.S. in 1999. Douglas loved his family and was a proud husband, father and grandfather; a devoted brother and uncle; and a steadfast friend.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Lois Albert of East New Market, by his children Philip Albert (and wife Barbara) of East New Market and Kristin Albert of New Egypt, New Jersey, by his grandchildren Rachael and Andrew Albert, by his brother Wilburn Albert (and wife Jean) of Woodbridge, Virginia, and by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Ernest and Robert Albert.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Krotee officiating.
