Rev. Frederick Ellwood Turner, 88, of Hurlock formerly of Cambridge passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Chesapeake Woods Center. He was born in Cambridge on February 11, 1925, a son of the late A. Vernon and Anna Heil Turner.
After graduating from Cambridge High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Ellwood was awarded the Europe-African Middle East Medal; American Campaign Medal; and World War II Victory Medal. He received his honorable discharge March 13, 1946. After returning home, he joined the family business, Turner's Gas. Ellwood married Josephine "Judy" Harris on September 21, 1946. They remained married until her death on May 21, 2009. He continued working at Turner's Gas with his brother, C. Rutledge Turner until they sold the business in 1985. On May 25, 2011, Ellwood married Arlene "Bunny" Unstead. Ellwood particularly enjoyed being with his friends and family, his life in the church, being on the water, camping, cooking and constructing model boats.
Ellwood was a life member of the Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW and a member of the American Legion Post 91. He was also a member of the Richardson Bible Class and St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Ellwood and Judy taught Bible Classes at St. Paul's for many years. He also taught Bible Classes at Brookview United Methodist Church and St. Stephen's Church until his health started to fail.
Ellwood is survived by his wife, Arlene Turner; a son, James Turner and his wife, Dawn; two grandsons, Blake Turner and Cody Turner; sister in-law, Elizabeth J. Turner; his nieces, Donna James and her son, Michael James; Faye Gravit and her husband, Tom Gravit and son Jeffery Greene; his nephews, C. Rutledge Turner Jr., Douglas Turner and his wife, Cornea Turner, their daughter, Ellie Davis and son Ryan Turner; several nieces and nephews; sister in-law, Peggy Harris of Charlotte, NC; a step son, Jimmy Gilbert and wife, Cindy Gilbert; a step daughter, Lynn Gilbert Keeny and her companion, Bob Todes; and special friends, Randall and Mary Ann Bradshaw. Besides his parents and his wife, Ellwood is preceded in death by two brothers, N. Vernon Turner and C. Rutledge Turner; and nephews Wayne Vernon Turner, Wayne Turner Jr. and Gregory Kyle Greene.
Pallbearers will be Phil McKelvey, Ron Schaake, George Simmons, Randall Bradshaw, Randy Bradford and Vaughn Holland.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev.'s Fred Bahr and A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Scott Daniels, 205 Maryland Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
